Development projects are carried out in areas that are already inhabited and used by a wide range of stakeholders. Municipalities, residents, organizations and Indigenous communities each bring their own realities, concerns and expectations that can influence project development. As a result, understanding the human environment has become an essential part of environmental studies and a key requirement of government environmental assessment processes.

Human environment experts help project teams better understand local realities and develop projects that are better suited to their host communities.

  1. What is a human environment study?

The human environment encompasses the social, economic, cultural, heritage and territorial characteristics of a given area. This analysis provides a better understanding of communities, land use, recreational activities, archaeological and heritage features, psychosocial effects and other issues that may be affected by a project.

This expertise provides additional insight into technical and environmental studies by focusing on the realities of those within the project area. By understanding social dynamics, land use patterns and stakeholder concerns, experts can identify challenges that may not always emerge through technical or regulatory data.

The role of social sciences in project development

Human environment expertise draws on disciplines such as anthropology, sociology and geography to better understand local realities. Maps, statistics and technical studies provide valuable information but cannot fully capture the human element of a project. By applying social science approaches, experts move beyond simply collecting data to analyzing social dynamics, land use, place-based values and the concerns of affected communities.

This broader perspective strengthens environmental assessments and gives project developers a more complete understanding of the host communities.

Consultations: a valuable tool for understanding the region

Consultations are a key part of understanding the human environment. They allow project teams to gather local knowledge, document stakeholder concerns and identify opportunities for improvement or mitigation measures tailored to the project context.

Human environment experts are also trained to engage with residents, organizations, Indigenous communities and other relevant stakeholders. These discussions help teams better understand how land is used while also exploring more sensitive issues, such as community perceptions, project-related concerns and stakeholder expectations. Through active listening and analysis, experts develop a nuanced understanding of local realities and the human issues associated with a project.

When consultation begins during the early planning stages, it helps establish constructive dialogue between developers and host communities while ensuring local realities are considered throughout project development.

    Expertise integrated throughout project development

At BBA, human environment expertise is incorporated from the earliest planning stages to help teams better understand local realities and identify the human issues a project may affect. Depending on the project context and needs, this expertise may involve ethnological and socioeconomic studies, psychosocial impact assessments, land use and land planning studies, landscape assessments and consultation processes, in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous settings. These steps can be delivered as standalone mandates or as part of a broader environmental impact assessment.

When incorporated into an environmental impact assessment, they help evaluate potential effects on communities and stakeholders, including First Nations. They also support the development of mitigation measures tailored to local conditions and help identify opportunities to reduce impacts and improve project integration within its host environment.

By contributing from the earliest planning stages through to project completion, human environment expertise provides valuable decision-making support that helps developers create better projects.
