BBA won the Lieutenant Governor’s Award and the Award of Excellence in the Municipal and Civil Infrastructure category for the Woodworth Dam project in Prince Rupert. The new structure, a 15-meter-high concrete gravity dam, was built downstream from the existing dam in a rocky canyon and will provide a stable water supply for the next 50 to 100 years.
BBA’s team of experts proposed an approach that optimized the original design while reducing the project budget by nearly 17%. The Woodworth Dam is located on Indigenous Nations land, so the communities were involved throughout the project to ensure special care and attention were taken to respect the location as well as their culture. Katie Au, National Practice Leader, Engineering, from the Vancouver office, won the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Award. Katie Au was instrumental in creating the BBA Diversity Committee and continues to be involved as Chair of the Western and Central Canada Committee. She also supports the Osmosis Network, an internal initiative created by a group of BBA women engineers that focuses on synergy to advance women’s talent and stimulate conversations around gender diversity. In addition, Katie has been actively involved in the ACEC-BC for several years, including being on the EDI Committee, which established the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award in 2021.
BBA is proud to be following in the footsteps of Engineers Canada and setting a goal to have 30% of women on its teams and in leadership positions by 2030.
