04 dic 2019Energía Eléctrica y RenovablesThe digital revolution is transforming how we work and communicate. It’s also changing how we connect and manage links between buildings using wide area networks (WANs) and software-defined WANs (SD-WANs). In an SD-WAN, the WAN is defined dynamically by a software layer that sits on top of the standard telecommunications links. But many wonder whether an SD-WAN solution is right for them and whether it will really reduce their connectivity costs. Let’s take a closer look at these questions. Is SD-WAN for everyone? Almost!-

12 nov 2019Energía Eléctrica y RenovablesHigh-voltage transmission power lines (69 kV and up) are designed to meet numerous performance criteria that, when combined with construction restrictions in the right-of-way, help keep people safe. However, developers of major infrastructure assets, such as pipelines, railways and telecommunications systems, have come under increasing pressure in recent years to use available rights of way. For example, there’s interest in reducing environmental impacts by using available corridors, even though transmission lines already run through them.Metal structures near high-voltage power lines: What are the risks?-

16 sept 2019Energía Eléctrica y RenovablesIf you type “alarm management” in a search engine, you will get hundreds of results including articles, papers, presentations and guides. Those results may contain some useful information, but in many cases, they deal with the complete process of alarm rationalization. The problem is that not everyone will dedicate the time and resources needed to implement an exhaustive alarm rationalization process that includes a comprehensive audit and the development of an alarm management philosophy document. This blog presents an easy and concrete method for quickly reducing the number of alarms received.Alarm rationalization: a guide for quick wins!-

05 ago 2019Energía Eléctrica y RenovablesAdvanced process control (APC) improves performance, stabilizes production, handles constraints, protects equipment and manages grade changes. At first glance, this solution might seem interesting to businesses. However, before adding an APC to an existing system, it would be wise to take a step back and assess the situation. For example, studies show that you can increase production by 1.5% by optimizing equipment use and basic control loops; however, advanced process control can increase production by 1.4%, for a total of around 3%. Of course, the first 1.5% is much easier to obtain and requires little investment. The simplest solutions are always the best: why make things more complicated if performance (production, quality, etc.) does not justify it? Profitability analyses should be conducted to validate project viability. Needs—not trends—should dictate choices! We have prepared a few questions that will help you start your planning, especially if you are thinking about implementing optimization solutions in the near future.Do you need advanced control?-

27 jun 2019Energía y químicosMore stringent regulations have been adopted to help reduce SO2 emissions measured under various parameters. In Canada, four provinces are reducing SO2 emissions (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Québec and Ontario) to comply with specific regulations and the Canada-wide Acid Rain Strategy. The 2019 review of Regulation 419/05 in Ontario is a clear example of the new limit reduced to more than 2.5 times compared to previous levels. Strict standards are also in effect in Québec (chapter Q-2, r. 4.1 of the Clean Air Regulation) and have been updated continuously since 2016. Canada has also adopted Ambient Air Quality Standards. In the United States, the Clean Air Act has required sustained monitoring measures and mitigation plans for over 10 years.Proven methods for reducing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions-
