Two BBA projects stood out on the national stage by earning an Award of Excellence at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards on October 15, 2026. The Mangrove Lithium commercial lithium refining plant project and the Beaver Creek Saa/Se solar energy project were among the award-winning achievements honoured this year through one of Canada’s most prestigious awards programs in consulting engineering. Saa/Se also earned the Sustainability Award, one of three Special Awards presented by the jury this year, recognizing the project’s outstanding environmental stewardship. These awards highlight our teams’ ability to design innovative solutions that address complex and strategic challenges.
In Delta, British Columbia, BBA helped commission the first commercial electrochemical lithium refining facility in North America. The project was delivered in partnership with Mangrove Lithium and transformed a promising technology into a fully operational industrial facility, marking a decisive step toward large-scale commercialization.
Completed on a highly ambitious schedule, the project brought together BBA teams to overcome the challenges of scaling up an innovative process while ensuring reliability, safe operation and rapid commissioning. Today, it’s helping strengthen a Canadian value chain for the critical materials used in battery manufacturing.
“An important contribution to Canada’s battery supply chain.”
– Jury
“Taking a lithium refining technology from the laboratory to a commercial-scale facility is a major technical challenge. This recognition reflects Mangrove Lithium's trust in BBA, our teams’ commitment to the project and the ability of engineering to bring energy-transition solutions to market faster.”
– Stéphane Charest, Vice-President, Energy and Chemicals
In Beaver Creek, Yukon, BBA worked with the White River First Nation and Copper Niisüü Limited Partnership to deliver the Saa/Se project, an initiative that’s redefining energy supply for a remote northern Canadian community. Combining a 1.9 MW solar generating station with a battery energy storage system (BESS), the project now supplies more than half of the community’s annual electricity demand while significantly lowering diesel consumption.
Beyond its energy efficiency, the project stands out for several exceptional achievements. It’s one of Canada’s largest diesel displacement projects powered by solar energy, was designed to operate in temperatures as low as -55°C and demonstrates that high levels of renewable energy integration are possible on an isolated northern grid. Driven by an Indigenous vision for energy development, it also serves as an inspiring model of energy sovereignty for remote communities.
“A community-owned energy system that could be a model for others.”
– Jury
“This recognition highlights the White River First Nation’s vision and the collective effort that made it possible to deliver a project tailored to northern realities. The Saa/Se project proves that it’s possible to combine reliable energy, local economic benefits and reduced dependence on fossil fuels in a remote community.”
– François Vitez, Vice-President, Power and Renewables
