22 dic 2022''This year, I went to an underground mine for the first time. At 260 metres below ground, I realized that just a year earlier, I was on top of a wind turbine. It’s extraordinary work; I’m involved in all types of projects. Power system studies have always been my thing because I love racking my brain to figure out how to make things work that don’t.Ingenious Women – Hassiba Lkoun-

21 jul 2022“I find it normal to see women in engineering. It’s such interesting and wonderful work; why wouldn’t women want to do it, too? As a civil engineer, above all, I’m fascinated by structural aesthetics and complexity. I love studying the behaviour of structures in detail and thinking about the aspects that will ensure that future occupants are comfortable and safe.Ingenious women – Valérie Houle-

12 abr 2022Energía Eléctrica y RenovablesWind energy is among the most promising renewable energy sources today. It’s reliable, renewable and emission-free and is increasingly attracting attention worldwide.1 However, the wind fluctuates enormously, depending on site and field characteristics, and its diurnal and seasonal variations are constantly being felt. Given its intermittent and stochastic nature, it is more challenging to predict wind speed and power.Bringing data science to wind energy, driving the energy transition forward -

13 dic 2021Minería y metalurgiaNumerous mining-related infrastructures have been built and operated across Canada and the world, and it is a common practice to analyze the stability of their tailings facilities. However, it remains challenging to do so when they are subject to dynamic loads, including earthquakes and blasts. Dynamic stability of tailings dams is commonly evaluated by using the pseudo-static method for low-risk regions. Such a simplified method can provide quick and cost-effective inputs. However, based on limit equilibrium analysis, it tends to oversimplify the dynamic response of tailings prone to liquefaction. In August 2020, following several recent catastrophic failures of tailings dams worldwide (e.g., Mount Polley in Canada, and Fundão and Brumadinho in Brazil), an international standard, Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM 2020), was formulated with more stringent seismic design criteria. In this context, BBA offers a more advanced approach, based on stress-strain (i.e., deformation) analysis, to specifically address stability problems for tailings storage facilities (TSF) that are subject to dynamic loads.Stress-strain analysis of tailings facilities subject to dynamic loads -
