Mining companies generally have three targets: Develop a viable project, secure environmental approvals quickly and earn lasting support from local communities.

But, in today’s world, with regulations that vary by jurisdiction, rapidly shifting social expectations and stricter environmental requirements, advancing a mining project becomes far more complex than engineering alone.

So, what’s the way forward?

Start early with a holistic approach that combines technical expertise, environmental rigour and genuine collaboration with stakeholders, including negotiating impact and benefit agreements with affected communities.

  1. Collaborate early for better outcomes

    Working closely with other project professionals from the start helps integrate key optimizations right away. This makes project development, implementation and, above all, social acceptability easier, from planning to mine closure.

    Time is strategic for project success

    Sound engineering design and controlled scheduling can accurately assess a mining project’s economic strength and technical reliability. However, environmental approvals and social acceptability rarely follow the same timeline.

    These processes can even stretch over several years and vary significantly from one jurisdiction to the next.

    To avoid delays and financial impacts, mining companies must:

    • Integrate permitting and environmental studies into the overall schedule.
    • Start consultations as early as possible.
    • Map key stakeholders and communities before launching the project.

    In Québec, for example, the permitting process for mining projects varies by territory and involves several levels of analysis, quickly turning into a regulatory maze.

  3. The power of multidisciplinary teams

    Many mining companies struggle to manage this level of complexity, and growing opposition in host communities adds another challenge.

    One solution is to rely on extended teams. Today, anthropologists, sociologists, communications experts and stakeholder engagement experts work with engineers and environmental professionals to design integrated solutions. These teams lower impacts on natural and social environments and build community trust.

    “A community's social acceptability begins with the very first project decisions. It grows as we listen, explain and adapt our choices throughout the project, guided by ongoing dialogue,” adds Hugues Châteauneuf, Senior Energy and Air Quality Consultant at BBA.

    Today, responsible mining development is no longer optional; it's the standard for success. It means reducing project impacts, leaving rehabilitated and viable environments and fully recognizing community involvement and concerns, while turning commitments into concrete actions. This is how mining companies build stronger, socially accepted and sustainable projects.
